How Fast Can A Cat Run? Do they run faster than humans?

Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,

A while back I wrote an article about how high cats can jump, and it really got me thinking… how fast to cats run? The answer may shock you, but domestic cats run at an average of 30 mph or 48 kph.

In comparison to humans

Cats can actually run faster than a human, so if your cat is darting away from you… you may have to rethink how you’re going to trap them to get their nails clipped! The fastest a human can run is 28 mph or 45 kph. The main difference is, cats can get from 0-30 very quickly, while humans take a bit longer to start up. Little fun fact, even the fastest runner Usain Bolt didn’t quite make it to beating a cat’s speed (marking in at 27.8 mph or around 44.7 kph)

In comparison to cars

Well, it’s obvious a car can drive much faster than a cat, but the average main road limit is at 30 mph, which means a cat can probably match up to you on a good day. Didn’t think your little bugger had it in them, eh?

So do some breeds run faster than others?

Absolutely, different cats have better genetics for running. The current list of top 9 breeds are Egyptian Mau, Abyssinian, Somali, Bengal, Savannah, Manx, Siamese, Ocicat, and Oriental.

So… have you ever seen your kitty reach their top speed? I think it would be cool to see Beau reach it and maybe one day I’ll get to see it!

It depends … is it in response to a food can opening or the sound of me getting the claw clippers out of the pantry 😉

Manny and Chili Bruce run round and round, When they hear the cat food can opening! Any human in their way had better watch out! Some Community cats that I try to befriend, can run awfully fast to get away for me!

When I and Minko were youngsters we could race around here like little blurry streaks of fur…now I can run, but well, my aged 13 year old legs don’t go quite as fast…though my whapping paw can move in a flash before you even knew what hit you I am gone and so it that paw!

And looky up there, I am a Meezer fast runner!

Oh man! That’s so scary! I know we didn’t think Walker could run super fast, one night he ran away and catching him was a bit difficult.
