A Litter Box Update

June 9, 2017 By Johnny Salib 12 Comments

Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,

If you didn’t get a chance to  read my Monday blog, you may not know that I have added pumpkin as a supplement into Beau’s diet. Beau hasn’t been a wet food enthusiast since we got him, and every once in a while he forgets water is his best friend. This always leaves him constipated and more recently has gotten him a UTI.

On Monday I reported that Beau’s poop wasn’t the most solid. We assume this is because of the new Urinary C/D food the vet prescribed to him. This week we are slowly introducing him back to a pH balanced food, but the pumpkin has worked miracles!  Beau has pooped every day with a much more solid … poop! The pumpkin has definitely gotten him more hydrated, especially because Weruva’s Patch Up! mix as very wet. We’ve also given him a bit of Nummy Tum Tum’s Organic Pumpkin which he actually doesn’t seem to mind. The benefit to the Nummy Tum Tum is the fact that is more solid, making it easy to mix kibble or cranberries into (without getting soggy.)

I’m happy Beau’s feeling better, especially as we prepare to head out to England for a week. Hopefully he will be perfect by tomorrow, so the sitter doesn’t have to worry too much!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I’m still looking for new wet foods to put into his diet… hopefully we’ll find one he doesn’t lose interest in.. or doesn’t just eat a bite of.

Purr.

I keep meaning to try pumpkin with Bear and then I forget. I’ve heard anecdotal evidence that most cats like it – Bear’s eaten it in the few varieties of wet foods that include it.

Oooh, I’m sure that Bear would love it then! It was super simple to get Beau to eat it surprisingly. Normally he sniffs stuff and walks away from it…

Good poop news! When we tried to switch Angel and Chuck from kibble to wet food, Chuck took to it right away, but Angel refused to eat. Then I read a blog post (again, thank heaven for that post!) that mentioned sprinkling grated parmesan cheese on the wet food. The cheese has a smell and texture like kibble, so Angel started to eat! We gradually reduced the amount of cheese (because it’s salty). Nowadays, I would use nutritional yeast instead; it’s got the cheesy smell and texture, but no salt and it’s rich in vitamins! And OH, I am envious of a trip to England; it’s on my to-to list!

I never thought about Parmesan! I’ll have to try it out, maybe that will get him going!

And, yes! I’m so excited!! Although I’m still sad to be leaving my babies!
