REVIEW: Catit Design Senses Grass Garden Kit

August 8, 2017 By Johnny Salib 31 Comments

Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,

You may not know this, but our household is a big fan of cat grass! We used to plant cat grass inside pots, but Beau kept digging into them and trying to eat the dirt. (Silly kitty!) So, I set off to find something that would keep the dirt in, and let the grass out! Although we currently have the Catit Design Senses Grass Garden Kit which has some issues I’d like to cover, I see they’ve come up with a new design called Catit Senses 2.0 Grass Planter which solves some of the issues. (I’ll probably be grabbing the newer design to properly test it out before recommending it.

So what do you like about this trinket Johnny?

Well, I like the size of it. It provides quite a lot of space for grass to grow. It did help make sure Beau didn’t get his hands into the seeds or into the soil and kept the grass alive for around 2 weeks. (Which seems to be the average of grass life in this household.) I liked how easy it was for me to clean, and how light & compact it is! Much better than using a regular planter. I also liked how difficult/tight the lid was. No matter how much Beau tried to open it, he just couldn’t do it! The grates at the top are quite big, so lots of grass could come through and if any grass pieces were uprooted, it did a pretty decent job of keeping the roots in. This is a double edged sword. I liked the height of this product because it was around a regular feeding bowl level, however, it felt pretty shallow for growing plants. My favourite thing about this product was the fact that I didn’t get gnats. I commonly get gnats in the house as grass starts to rot, and for some reason… I never got them with this product! (If any of you have any tips and tricks for how to keep gnats out of grass, please let me know! Boy do we hate them!)

What didn’t you like?

Unfortunately, the seeds and substrate in this pack weren’t that great quality. Most of them didn’t sprout, so I had to buy third party seeds. A great & inexpensive brand I can recommend is Magic Grow Wheat Grass and if you don’t believe me, then just ask all the awesome reviews on Amazon! The biggest issue I found with this product is the draining issues/overwatering issues. When you follow the instructions given in the packet, it actually causes you to water too frequently which caused a lot of mould and rot. Actually, even when we changed their mulch to soil and watered less, we got a ton of mould. This isn’t safe for your kitties!! And this is why we stopped using the product in the first place. Apparently, their newer version helps drain better and provides a bigger area for unused water to stay, so it might actually be a better purchase.

Conclusion

I have to honestly give this contraption a 2/5. I absolutely love Catit and support a lot of their products, but this version of a grass planter isn’t a great buy. If you are going to take a risk with it, I definitely recommend altering the plastic by popping holes in the bottom to help drain some water & reduce mould. But this should not be the responsibility of the customer to “figure out” or try out.

So, here’s the part where I ask you… have you found a grass planter you like? If so which one? Have you tried out this one and found the same issues?

Oh no! That sucks! But I totally understand. Walker used to eat too much grass too and would throw up.

Too bad the product doesn’t work better because it is stylish. If I were a grass-eating kitty (which I’m not), Mom would just grow some in a ceramic pot.

I like the part that it keeps dirt in. Also that it doesn’t get gnat. We had the same issue but haven’t had since we began to add Cedarcide granules into the dirt. It’s supposed to repel bugs, and seems to be working that way ๐Ÿ™‚

Oooh! I’ll look into that. I haven’t actually done much research into how to keep gnats away (how silly of me!)

The Feeder Maze they have Cody knocked over to get the treats out of lol…………..he did it in less than 5 seconds…….the heck with solving a maze…..he went right to the “heart” of the matter lol

Oh man, that’s not so fun. We have about 5 products from them, haven’t had issues so far. This was the first one that I wasn’t so happy about. I haven’t tried a feeder maze yet (just because of the price range) but as soon as I have some spending money, you know our little ones are getting spoiled!

I grew up in the concrete jungle so I’m not a grass eater. You might want to try Pet Grass, which I reviewed here. http://www.stunningkeisha.com/2015/12/6-reasons-your-cat-needs-petgrass-ad.html. It’s a subscription basis where they’ll send you three pots every so many weeks. It lasted quite awhile and the price has come down a lot since I reviewed it.. Do remember, though, if you review a productโ€”even one you boughtโ€”you need a disclaimer for the FTC.

Not necessarily sure if that applies to us since we live in Canada, however we do have the disclosure on our advertise page: http://petsoverload.com/advertise/ But I will look into it ๐Ÿ™‚ Will also check out the cat grass and see if I can get some here ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the honest review. I love to chew on grass but the mom won’t grow me any because last time she did, I pulled it all out of the planter and made a big mess. Hey…so what? I was happy! ~Wally

I’ve never tried cat grass. With Bear, I had to give up houseplants – but something like this might be a decent alternative. His desire to get outside seems limited to eating grass … so maybe I’ll do some research into different brands.

We tried the garden kit a while back and liked it. It was easy for our mom to grow, and Lexy loved eating the grass. (I don’t do grass.) We were lucky we didn’t get any mold. The box we had was different, so I wonder if they’ve changed it since we used it?

You may have gotten the 2.0 version! That kit’s box is brown and is much more compact. The one we used is the older version (since it was the only one available in Canada at the time.)

Haha! Both of my little guys LOVE grass. When I used to take Walker outside he would walk around our lawn trying to eat it… so I thought, better safe than sorry, let me grow it myself instead of letting him eat grass we couldn’t trust 100%!
