Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,
We were recently contacted by Meowfia in hopes of seeing what our kitties think about their cat beds. If you know our family well, you know we’re not really a “cat bed” or “cat tree” type of home (since Beau prefers to sleep in our lap and Kalista loves running around like the crazy Calico that she is!)
I will say, as soon as I saw these beds I thought they were extremely cute and such a great idea, but I was still nervous about whether my cats would use them. Honestly, at a $40-60 USD price point, I would want to be 100% sure my cats would use these adorable and given our luck with purchasing toys our cats ignore… I thought these beds might not be interesting to them.
So, let me break down what about 2-weeks with these cute cat beds has been like!
Unique Things About the Beds
These beds are handmade from Merino Wool, which is known to repel odours, as well as stains/debris. They come in two different sizes and all different colours. They do not include harsh chemicals or synthetics.
Which Beds We Have
It’s important to know that there are different styles of these beds and while they are both made out of wool, they do feel a bit different. We have a Small, Dark-Gray, Knitted Premium Felt Bed Cat Cave and a Large, Light-Gray, Premium Cat Bed Cave.
Introducing my Cats to the Bed
Beau has a fear of being enclosed or in tight places. He doesn’t like boxes that are upright, he hates his carrier and he doesn’t hide like Kalista does. Kalista, on the other hand, loves small, confined places. She’s the cat that you can find sleeping in her carrier about 80% of the day (if she’s not cuddled up to Beau). Actually, I’m always worried that we lost her or that she somehow got into the hallway because we often can’t find her! But my hubby always reminds me to check the carrier and low-and-behold, she’s always there! (I don’t know why I don’t make that the first place I check…) That all being the case, it was fairly easy to get Kalista to go into the bed compared to Beau.
Introducing Kalista With Catnip
Since Kalista is a huge fan of catnip, it was easy for me to lure her into the beautiful cocoon of a bed by placing catnip near the back of the bed. She immediately walked in, ate some nip and went crazy! Her first interaction with the bed lasted about 2 minutes and was primarily her attacking the bed from the inside, running out of it, jumping on top of it and kangaroo kicking it. I truly wish I had a video of this interaction because she hasn’t been as aggressive with the bed since, but for a first-time use… that’s pretty awesome! (I do however have lots of videos of them interacting with the beds which will be at the bottom of this review.)
Introducing Beau with Food
If you know anything about Beau, you know he’s usually the most driven when he thinks he’s going to get fed. So, I knew I would have to offer him lots of Greenies to try to lure him into the bed. Sadly, it didn’t work as well as the catnip worked for Kalista. Beau kept trying to find ways to get the food without actually going into the Meowfia Cat Bed.
This didn’t stop me from trying other tactics, such as snuggling him close to me then slipping him into the bed, or putting his head in slowly so he could take a quick sniff around. I tried for about 2 days, but there was absolutely no chance he was going to sleep inside of the bed… until…
My Cats Prefer to Flatten the Bed and Sleep On Top
It could just have to do with the fact that our apartment is currently blazing hot (since we don’t have AC), but my cats both love to jump on top of the beds and flatten them. At first, it was just Beau, but Kalista learned fairly quickly. They would sit on opposite side of the room just staring at each other. Beau seems to prefer the smaller gray bed with the knit and Kalista likes the large one with no knit. (Funny, because I originally got the large one for Beau and the small one for Kalista.) When they started sleeping on top of the beds ( also on the 3rd day) I decided to try again, slowly putting their heads into the beds so they could sniff around and we had a winner! Both Beau and Kalista started sleeping inside of the beds! Although I will say, they still do a lot of squashing and sleeping on top of the beds.
The great thing about these beds is it’s very, very easy to bring them back to their cocoon-like shape. Since they are soft and very malleable you can simply push them up with your hand, or as Valerie from Meowfia suggested, you can stuff the bed with some pillows or tightly wrapped towels to help them regain their shape. I haven’t actually tried that yet since it would have to be a daily chore and I’m just happy my cats are using the beds (flat or not).
The Beds are Great for Playing
I think my favourite thing about the beds so far is the fact that it gets my cats playing… or at least I think they’re playing. As always, it’s mostly Kalista who’s the trouble case and whenever Beau is inside one of the caves, she darts at or pounces him, making sure to land right on top of him. (This is included in the adorable video of them using the beds) It’s quite a funny sight to see, especially because of how fast Beau runs away and tries to play it off like nothing happened. Although, there have been some times where Beau will stay in the bed until he gets annoyed with her continually attacking him. If Kalista misses landing on Beau, she’ll lie near the bed and will bat at him until he gives her attention (see photo above). Quite an adorable, but naughty pair, eh?
Quality of the Product
I’ll be honest, this is my first wool product, so I have no clue how to tell if the wool is a high quality or if it’s real. It is very, very soft and super warm. I know the cats will absolutely love snuggling up in the beds during the winter, while I’m wrapped up in blankets! I will say there’s a surprising amount of fallout from this product. I’m not sure if that’s normal or if it’s a bad thing. I mean, let me be fair and say that it’s not a whole lot of fall out, and it’s about one or two tufts a day from the cats kneading the beds. I’m sure this isn’t going to damage the beds too much and that it’s normal. I will definitely keep you updated as I do with all my reviews!
Otherwise, these beds seem very durable. I don’t feel like I can rip them apart and the wool is very compact. I’m sure they’re going to last a while, especially since Kalista has already been fairly aggressive with the beds.
Conclusion
I think these beds are an awesome addition to our home. I can’t really see anything that’s wrong with them. They’re absolutely adorable, warm and cozy. I would rate these beds a full 5/5 and can easily say I was very surprised and happy to see how much my cats love these beds.
