Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,
Over the years of being a cat parent, I’ve learned that the placement of water bowls, food bowls, litter boxes, and even cat toys is extremely important. Because of this, I’ve made sure to move things around every so often to see what the cats prefer and it seems like we’ve found the newest home for our cat tree.
The cat tree was originally placed in our bedroom by a window so that the cats could look outside for entertainment, but since our windows are much smaller than the windows at our old place it seems like the cats have lost interest in looking outside. There have been the few times that the cats have sat on the ledges, so maybe when the summers back they will be interested in the windows again, but I can confidently say that they have avoided them at all costs since late October.
As mentioned in the past few posts, we’re currently battling with our new windows being poorly insulated so until we can get our heating unit fixed (which we’re hoping to get done next week) we’ve been trying to keep my office as toasty as possible, which is the new location for the cat tree.
On days where the weather is too cold (-15°C) I leave the office doors closed to keep the office warm, and it’s on these days that the cats will come paw at the door when they are ready to enter what I’ve been nicknaming the safe room. As mentioned previously, the cats aren’t really minding the colder weather as they’re either sticking to sleeping together on the couch, inside of their cat caves or Kalista’s new favourite spot hidden under the covers.
Oh, oh, oh! Cute little Kalista moment. I woke up to her and Beau sleeping between my legs today! Adorable eh?
As you can tell, I get fairly distracted while writing these “cute cat stories” so I’ll get back to the main point of this one.
I’ve had the cat tree in my office for about 4 days now and Beau has been using it every day. The cats are actually playing on it more, especially when I’m able to leave the door open for them to freely come in and out of the office. I will say, the use it’s been getting has been causing the screws to get a bit loose, which is something I’m going to keep an eye out on, because Kalista loves to toss and turn, especially on the top.
That being said, I’m glad Beau is using the tree more since it seemed like it was Kalista’s domain for months upon months. That’s not to say that he didn’t use it, because he definitely did, just not this much.
So I’m curious pet parents, have you had to move things around your house in the past to make your cats use them more? What were they and where did you move them to? Let me know in the comments below!
I’ve often wondered if my cats would use our cat tree more if it wasn’t in a corner. But they both use it to look out the window … so maybe not. But I feel better about being up against a wall with the perches being so high.
I feel you. I always feel safer with cat-related objects against walls. Cat trees, beds, litterboxes etc. My cats tip things over all the time, so to at least reduce the chances by 50% is a lot to me.
the cat perchs here; one was dude’s, the other was boomer’s that mom gave
to me years ago, set by the window as they are ledge height. I bought a higher
one; three tiers and set it in front of another window and to be perfectly honest;
with tuna’s size I was paranoid he was going to jump into it with such force he’d crack the window. I moved it to a wall and he seems to not mind, until mackerull comes along and wants top berth 😉 ♥
Oh man, yeah that’s a good call. I’m super nervous about things attached to windows. I’ve seen those suction cup perches as well…. not sure if my cats can be held with those.
