Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,
You may have noticed the site went silent for a number of days, and let me tell you… I didn’t mean for that to happen. Last week I had my hard drive crash, which ended up with me losing all of my work/images that I have taken over the past four years. I took some time to write about it on my personal blog, but to summarize that blog post… I’ve been working really hard at trying to retrieve as much information as I could that was scattered on multiple clouds as well as USBs/alternate hard drives just so I had enough material to start teaching today. Sadly, a lot of the images I took of our little ones are gone.
I am really grateful that I run Pets Overload because I still have all of those images saved in the cloud, but it’s sad to know that there were a lot of outtakes that I found cute or was going to introduce in the weekly caption contests that may never see the light of day.
For now, I have decided not to go down the route of paying for data recovery (because that’s very, very expensive), but I will be keeping that hard drive somewhere safe so that I can recover the information when my budget/income is more substantial.
Hopefully, that will be very soon, but until then I have committed to paying for an online cloud at Sync.com to make sure this never happens again. If you don’t already have a cloud account and are worried about losing your data I recommend getting a free account today. If you click the link I’ve provided you will also get an extra GB of free storage (that I will also receive for referring you!) In the past I’ve been a huge Dropbox user, and while I love their platform their prices are much too high if you’re hoping to store as many pictures as I have. Their referral program also only gives you 500mb/referral and limits you to 15GB while it seems like Sync doesn’t limit you. (I may be wrong though.)
All in all, though, I hope I never have to take that much time off from running this blog again. I really missed posting daily and will try my hardest to catch up on all the days I’ve missed.
Thank you again, everyone, for all of your support for this blog, I appreciate it so much. Here’s to never losing data again! Especially not of the little cuties that live in our household <3
What a heartbreak! I back up to an external HD regularly, so while I’ve never lost anything to a crash, I have deleted stuff inadvertently. I was able to use software to recover it (thankfully!–it was 2 years worth of work), but had a brain freeze once that resulted in 1, the shredding of all paper certification coursework, and 2, thinking that I still had all that while moving files from an old to a new PC and losing the electronic files. (Years later I still mourn the loss of the best legal paper on internet law I ever wrote. Oh well.)
Oh my gosh. That’s terrible. I’ve done stupid things like that before. I actually deleted 8 years of photos once because I thought I wouldn’t care about them. I haven’t missed them yet, but I know when I get older I’ll want to know what I looked like as a teenager.
I am sorry you lost so much information. I upload all my photos to Walgreens where I order prints from so I consider that my free storage.
Ooh! That’s a great idea. I actually don’t even have prints of my kitties yet!
We are sorry to hear about your hard drive crashing. That really stinks about all those photos that lost. But when you get enough funds together than you can get what you need back. Hope everything works out for you in the end. Have a great day.
We’re sorry to hear about your hard drive. Claire is a crazy back-up lady : she uses a paid Cloud AND two external hard drives every week. Purrs
That’s true commitment! I should take from her example!
The Apple techs told me YEARS ago that my hard drive was probably the culprit for my computer problems, but I’ve been nursing it along (and I purchased a back-up drive). However, your crash has me believing that it’s time to the leap into a new computer asap, because I losing even one old, blurry photo of Angel and Chuck as babies would simply KILL me!
MacBooks are the worst for hard drive crashes >_<. I've had 3 MacBook hard drives crash on me now. Luckily, I'll say Apple has been gracious and gave me replacements because of the extended warranty I bought. The new MacBooks have SSDs though! So you should have 0 problems with them!

Thanks friends! Sadly no, while we’re still working on settling in, that wasn’t the case for the disappearance this time!
Sorry about your hard drive crashing. Now I know why there wasn’t a caption contest. Computer Crashing been there, Mother drive went on my last computer. Did you buy a new computer. I would think it would be cheaper. Good luck.
Luckily, I didn’t need to buy a new computer as it was my external!
