Kalista Has Been Stealing Gary’s Hay Again (Cute Cat Story)

Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,

I often wonder what’s going on in my cat’s heads, especially Kalista who seems to be one of the most curious and mischevious cats I’ve ever had.

In the past, I’ve covered some habits it seems Kalista has developed including tucking herself into bed and while we trained it out of her, she used to run into the hallway each time we’d come home.

More recently, Kalista as been learning how to hide her toys and her favourite things into “secret spaces” similar to what dogs do with their favourite objects or their owner’s slippers. I wasn’t aware that cats potentially have the same instinct to hide and hoard their favourite objects, but it seems that Kalista has it.

Earlier this month we started noticing that Kalista was breaking into our laundry room to sleep in the laundry baskets. Since we feel like the laundry room is currently not the safest for our cats, we’ve decided to move all of our laundry baskets to my closet (which currently doesn’t have a doorknob.)

I personally don’t mind Kalista breaking into my closet, because there’s a couple of cute carpets for her to sleep on and there’s nothing really dangerous in there. That being said, she quickly learned that the laundry baskets were being stored in my closet and has been pulling the door open every so often to sleep on my clothes, the carpets or in empty baskets.

Well, this week was actually a bit different.

I noticed some of my clothes had been moved around and I questioned if Kalista had moved them to make herself more comfortable, but it seems like she was just being a sneaky, sneak and was hiding one of her prize possessions… Gary’s hay!

Ever since we adopted Kalista she’s been oddly interested in eating Gary’s hay. Even though we’ve scolded Kalista for eating hay and have taken it away from on multiple occasions, she always seems to sneak her paws into Gary’s cage and grab some to nibble on.

Now, there isn’t really anything wrong with cats eating hay as it’s very similar to cat grass, but the worry is that Kalista will eat too much and will upset her stomach. It has, unfortunately, happened once that Kalista ate too much hay and ended up vomiting, although she hasn’t done that since.

Now… I am a bit worried to see her hiding hay underneath my clothes in the laundry basket. It’s clear that Kalista is going to find ways of hiding hay for her to chew on whenever she so pleases and it makes sense why Kalista is trying to break into the closet more and more these days.

I’m unsure why exactly Kalista is hiding the hay though. Is it because we’ve been discouraging her eating hay? Has she decided to hide the hay because that’s the only way she’ll be able to eat it, or is this just a new pattern or habit she’s exhibiting.

I mentioned a few days ago that Kalista started hiding springs in our bed, which makes sense because she loves bringing her springs anywhere she goes. That being said, we know that Kalista is getting more and more comfortable with us especially as we started waking up with her in our bed. Well, not only that, but our bed has become one of her favourite places to sleep throughout the day.

So, Kalista’s “hiding of the hay” could potentially be because she’s trying to hide the hay from us in a place where she knows we’re not going to look, or she’s just hiding the hay there because she loves the laundry baskets. I’m not sure just yet, but I am sure that I want to discourage this habit as much as possible. What is your obsession with hay Kalista!!!

Either way, do any of you have cats who like to hide things? What do they like to hide? Where do they hide them? Let me know in the comments below!

I had a cat who would hide a piece of dog food in shoes. Always just one piece. He loved to bat round pieces of dog food around the kitchen floor. I don’t know if he was saving it as a toy or as a snack, since he occasionally nibbled on it. No harm came of it, except that, in summer, our feet would smell like stale dog food. Poor guy died over 30 years ago, and I still miss him.

That is such a sweet story. He sounds like an adorable cat, minus being the cause of your feet smelling like stale dog food…
