Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,
I’m happy to say that as the spring semester rolls in I will actually have much more time to spend with our cats. That being said, this helicopter pet dad has been keeping an even closer eye out on his little ones and has noticed something new about Kalista.
Kalista is an interesting cat. She’s very active, loves to play with teaser toys, is always rubbing herself against you. Well, she’s also a silly cat who falls asleep periodically while standing, always wants to be around you even while eating, and my inside sources let me know that she’s actually in love with her water fountain this week.
When I first bought the Catit water fountain it was to help encourage Beau to drink more since he had frequent urinary tract infections and at the time refused to eat any and all wet food. I will say, the Catit water fountain was wonderful and did a great job encouraging Beau to drink more water, but when Beau started to eat wet food mixed with water, he didn’t seem to need to drink anymore.
We thought the same thing would go for Kalista, though we always leave out a bowl of fresh water just in case the cats get thirsty while we’re sleeping or are away… though it seems like both of the cats tend to ignore these.
That being said, I have caught Kalista cruising around the water fountain on multiple occasions, usually sticking her paws in it or taking a few sips here and there. There was also a time where she had fallen asleep looking into the centre of the water fountain. I had to snap a few photos immediately because as soon as Kalista heard the shutter on my phone, she immediately woke up and started marching towards me as she always does.
Although this instance happened, I didn’t realize that Kalista liked the fountain all that much and actually disconnected it a few days ago exchanging it with a few bowls of water.
There wasn’t a real reason to disconnect the fountain other than, I personally thought it was wasting electricity and that the cats were rarely using it… so why have it plugged in, but the next moment changed my mind.
Early Sunday morning I heard a whimper I’ve never heard before. It was Kalista crying from the living room, pawing at the water fountain. I worried immediately and thought, oh no… she must be dehydrated or something! I rushed and got her a bowl of water, but she refused to touch it. She just kept pawing at the fountain.
I cleaned the fountained thoroughly and brought it back running it, and Kalista immediately started drinking.
When she was done drinking she began to purr and rubbed her face all over the fountain, rolling from side to side in excitement. I guess I didn’t realize that the fountain brought her so much joy.
Kalista then stood up, put her paws in the fountain and started the process again, falling to the floor and rolling around. I really wish I got a video of it, though I feel like there’s a huge possibility I will be able to see it again in the near future.
When she was all done with her “I love you ritual” she made her way to me, sitting in my lap, purring and pushing her face against my chin. What a little cutie!
It’s unfortunate when we buy cat products that don’t work well, or don’t really benefit our cats, but I’m so happy to see Kalista love the fountain so much. I guess it’s both a place for her to be entertained (with it’s dripping noises and constant flow of bubbles) and a place for her to get some water sustenance.
It is also making me look at the mega list I made for water fountains and is making me want to try and find other ones to review. Who knows, Kalista may have one she loves even more!
So, pet parents, I’m curious… do your cats have any objects or toys that they absolutely love which surprised you? Do they ever beg for something in particular (other than treats 😉 )? Let me know in the comments below!
