Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,
Every winter I count the days until warmer weather and more sun. I think those days are almost here!
Now that our time zone has switched from Eastern Standard Time to Eastern Daylight Time the sun is staying out much later and it feels so much warmer than it has been, although we are still hovering in the 1-3 degrees Celcius area. Still, it’s better than the -12 we were hovering at for weeks!
I will say I was worried that we weren’t going to be getting much sun in our apartment since it’s East facing and our windows aren’t the biggest, but this week completely changed my mind. I had previously been so spoiled by our first apartment, which had windows on two sides of it, and the apartment we most recently moved from which faced south and had floor to ceiling windows.
As is with so many other people, I’m someone who absolutely needs natural light to stay happy and healthy. Not only that, I’ve been having trouble finding the right lightbulbs to light up my office so I can see properly without strain. (I currently have 3 lamps and 1 ceiling light that all have to be on, and it still doesn’t feel like enough, even though they all use LED lightbulbs. If anyone has any advice or resources to look at for how to properly light a room, let me know!)
I’m really happy to say that every morning around 9 AM our whole apartment floods with light, so much so that my office feels like a sauna. This morning, I even had to open a window so it didn’t feel like I was suffocating, which excites me so much!
The cats have even taken notice of how warm our apartment is and come running to the windows every morning, especially when I open my office door.
The cutest moment this week was when Beau ran in front of me, bashed right into the door with his paws and opened the office so he could lie down in his meowfia bed.
I’m actually still so shocked with how much the cats love those bed, and found it amazing how excited Beau was for me to wake up to use it (even though he clearly knows how to plow open the door.)
I’ve also placed Beau’s old bed on a storage container that sits next to my desk in hopes of him using it more, and while he does spend the majority of his day sleeping on either the cat tree or the meowfia bed, he does frequent the bed especially in the early morning when there’s a lot of sunlight.
It’s no secret that our cats love their sunlight, and Beau especially loves it when I open the window and let him listen to the birds.
Every so often Beau will get out of his bed to stand on the window ledge, watching the birds zoom by. Sometimes he gets too excited and bangs his head against the window, especially if a bird comes too close and he thinks he can catch it. It’s cute to watch him with his butt in his bed and his paws on the ledge as if he’s too lazy to get out of bed but wants to watch the cars drive by. I’m sure he’s going to love it when the leaves are back!
Beau has always been a window kitty, and as mentioned, it was my biggest worry that he wasn’t going to like the windows in this apartment because it didn’t seem like they gave a whole lot of light.
It would have broken my heart if Beau didn’t spend any time by the windows especially because of how happy I would find him throughout the day in both of our old apartments.
Kalista, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to really care that spring is coming. She’s been spending all of her time in her cat tree or sleeping in our bed. It seems like the bed is now her new “safe spot” which is such a 180 from when we first adopted her and she wouldn’t even get near the bed.
That being said, I do have a little weird story of something that happened yesterday.
While I was recording some music I mistakenly stepped on Kalista’s tail and since I was wearing headphones I didn’t realize right away (I probably had a 1-2 second reaction time). I took off my headphones to see what was happening, quickly looking down to see a screaming Kalista. Suddenly Beau came darting into the room.
Beau took a big swipe at me and bit my leg trying to protect Kalista even though she had already stopped screaming and I already picked my foot off her tail. While the whole situation was a pretty scary experience I will say… it’s good to know that Beau will protect his sister if anything was to happen.
It’s clear that Kalista and Beau have bonded so much, but I’ve never actually seen a cat defend another cat! (Not because it doesn’t happen, just because I haven’t seen it.)
It really puts me at ease knowing that Beau cares for Kalista enough to “turn against” me, and again while I wish I hadn’t stepped on Kalista’s tail in the first place there was some sweetness involved.
That being said, anyone else have a cat like Kalista who seems to always want to be around you making them the perfect candidate for being stepped on?
Kalista has been doing it more and more as of late and while I find it really heartwarming that she loves me so much, she keeps trying to run between my legs at the absolute worst times.
This whole coming and lying by my feet while I’m recording music is new though and is problematic especially when I’m playing piano and need the pedal.
Hopefully, I can encourage her to come for attention at a different time to try to keep her safe.
